Pacific Beef Co.

Constructed for the Hammond Beef Company of Fort Greene1 , the richly-decorated (and heavily-eroded) brownstone decoration includes a steer's head in the keystone of main arch. This building was one of many along North 6th Street that formed the nucleus of Williamsburg's meat packing district from the late-19th century forward. The buildings along the south side of North 6th Street were serviced at the rear by a rail spur connecting to the Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal.

Pacific Beef Co. (which took over from Hammond) was  a branch of the Manhattan Beef Co. of West 35th Street. Manhattan Beef's other branches included Atlantic Beef (174 Fort Greene Place), East River Beef (L.I.C.), T. H. Wheeler (Little West 12th Street), Hoboken Beef Co. (Hoboken), Hudson River Beef Co. (West 132nd Street). 2
